Barbie Hsu, star of Meteor Garden, passes away at 48 from flu complications
Taiwanese singer and actress Barbie Hsu has tragically passed away at the age of 48 due to complications from the flu. The news of her death first emerged online on Sunday, February 2, and gained further attention when her ex-husband, Wang Xiaofei, reportedly changed his social media profile picture to black.
The news was eventually confirmed by Hsu's younger sister, Taiwanese entertainer Dee Hsu, in a statement made on Monday morning through her manager.
"Thank you all for your concern! During the New Year holiday, our whole family traveled to Japan. My beloved and kind sister, Xiyuan, sadly passed away due to pneumonia caused by the flu. I’m so grateful to have been her sister in this life, to have cared for one another and been by each other's side. I will always be thankful for her and will miss her forever. Shan~ Rest in peace! I will love you forever—Together, forever in our hearts," Dee Hsu wrote in a heartfelt message to Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS News.
Barbie Hsu was best known for her role as Dong Shancai in the beloved Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden, which aired in 2001. In the show, she starred alongside Jerry Yan, Vic Chou, Ken Chu, and Vanness Wu, gaining widespread recognition.
Her career began in 1994 when she and her sister Dee formed the musical duo SOS (which later became ASOS). The two also went on to host several popular TV shows, including Guess, 100% Entertainment, and Gourmet Secrets of the Stars. Other TV projects Hsu was involved in included roles in Mars, Corner With Love, and Summer’s Desire.
Hsu, who had previously been married to South Korean singer DJ Koo, leaves behind two children from her marriage to Wang.
