Maria Sharapova’s family journey: From tennis champion to motherhood

Maria Sharapova, born on April 19, 1987, in Nyagan, Russia, is the daughter of Yuri Sharapov and Yelena. Before her birth, her parents moved from Gomel, Belarus, to Siberia to escape potential health risks caused by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

When Maria was three years old, the family settled in Sochi, Russia, where her father introduced her to tennis. Recognizing her talent at a young age, they made a bold decision in 1994 to move to the United States so she could receive professional training.
