Maria Sharapova’s family journey: From tennis champion to motherhood
Maria Sharapova, born on April 19, 1987, in Nyagan, Russia, is the daughter of Yuri Sharapov and Yelena. Before her birth, her parents moved from Gomel, Belarus, to Siberia to escape potential health risks caused by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
When Maria was three years old, the family settled in Sochi, Russia, where her father introduced her to tennis. Recognizing her talent at a young age, they made a bold decision in 1994 to move to the United States so she could receive professional training.
In her personal life, Sharapova got engaged to British businessman Alexander Gilkes in December 2020. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Theodore, in July 2022.
Sharapova has shared glimpses of her family life on social media, including a visit to Wimbledon with Theodore and Gilkes, where she proudly showed her son her name on the Wall of Champions.
Motherhood has been a transformative experience for Sharapova. She has spoken about how the discipline and structure from her tennis career have helped her navigate parenting.
While she values routines, she also understands the importance of adapting as her son grows and changes. She has openly discussed her experiences with breastfeeding and the joy of watching her child develop.
Sharapova's journey from a world-class athlete to a dedicated mother highlights her ability to balance different aspects of her life with the same determination that made her a champion on the court.
