The secrets of Eldermere village: A retiree’s unforgettable encounter with the past

After working as an accountant for 40 years in a bustling city, Mr. Augusto decided it was time for a change. Upon retiring, he sold his small apartment in the city center and moved to a simple house in a distant village called Eldermere. He longed for peace and quiet and dreamt of tending a garden.

When Augusto arrived at the house, he was delighted. It was an old building with wooden blue-painted windows and a small yard filled with fruit trees. The village was calm, and while the locals seemed friendly, they were somewhat reserved.

“Welcome, Mr. Augusto,” said Dona Lúcia, his closest neighbor, handing him a basket of fruit.

“How kind of you, Dona Lúcia. Thank you! This place feels like paradise,” he replied warmly.

“It may seem so, but be careful... sometimes the Eldermere hides its secrets,” she said with a mysterious wink.

Augusto laughed it off, thinking it was just a joke. “Secrets? Well, I’ll uncover them all.”

The first few weeks were peaceful as Augusto planted lettuce, tomatoes, and herbs in his yard. But soon, odd things began to occur. One night, while watering the garden under the moonlight, he thought he heard the trees whispering, as if carried by the wind.

“Be careful with the well,” a faint voice seemed to say.

The next morning, he discovered an old well covered by wooden planks. When he tried to remove them, a voice shouted, “Don’t touch that!”

Startled, Augusto turned to see an elderly villager, Mr. Arnaldo, who warned him to leave the well alone, hinting at mysterious tales tied to it.

One evening, Augusto heard footsteps in his yard. Grabbing a flashlight, he ventured outside and spotted a translucent figure—a man standing beside the well.

“Who are you?” Augusto asked, trembling.

“I am the guardian... and you are in danger,” the figure replied before disappearing.

Shaken, Augusto shared the experience with Dona Lúcia, who revealed that decades ago, a man living in the house had hidden something valuable in the well, and his spirit now guarded it.

Determined to uncover the mystery, Augusto removed the planks one night and found an old chest containing letters and a diary. They were love letters a man had hidden during wartime to protect them from destruction.

Augusto felt a sense of peace, as if the spirit he saw had been thanking him.

“This house has stories worth telling,” he told Dona Lúcia the next day.

From that day forward, Augusto not only tended his garden but also began writing about the legends of Eldermere. Sitting on his porch each night, he sometimes thought he could hear the wind whisper, “Thank you, Augusto.”
