The unexpected encounter: A family's hidden truth
My wife, Carolina, and I had always dreamed of expanding our family. However, due to health issues, she was unable to have children. So, it was just the three of us—her, me, and my five-year-old daughter, Laura, from my previous marriage. Carolina loved Laura as her own, and our home was full of laughter and love.
After many conversations, we decided that the best way to make our dream come true was through adoption. We scheduled a visit to a local orphanage, filled with anticipation, eager to meet the child who would complete our family.
When we arrived, we were greeted by the orphanage director, Mrs. Helena, a kind-eyed lady. She guided us through the halls, where several children were playing. As we walked, a little girl in the corner of the room caught my attention.
My heart stopped.
She was the spitting image of my daughter, Laura. Same age, same golden curls, same bright green eyes. It was as if I were looking at a reflection of Laura in a mirror.
Carolina noticed too and squeezed my hand tightly.
— "Miguel... are you seeing what I’m seeing?" — she whispered, visibly shocked.
The little girl looked at us, curious. She seemed scared but, at the same time... familiar.
Mrs. Helena noticed our reaction and smiled gently.
— "I see you’ve noticed little Isabela."
— "Who is she?" — I asked, my voice almost a whisper.
The director grabbed a folder from a desk and handed it to us. As I opened the documents, I felt a chill run down my spine.
— "Isabela was left here four years ago. She has never known her biological parents."
My heart raced as I read the name of the biological mother.
It was the name of my ex-wife.
I looked at Carolina, who was just as stunned as I was. My thoughts were a mess. I was sure my ex-wife had never mentioned another child. How could this be possible?
— "This must be a mistake..." — I murmured, but a strange feeling told me it wasn’t.
— "Miguel, what if..." — Carolina hesitated, her eyes full of emotion.
Mrs. Helena noticed our unease.
— "Would you like to meet her?"
I was about to answer when Isabela walked over and looked directly at me.
— "Hi... you look like my dad." — she said with a shy smile.
My heart skipped a beat. Carolina placed her hands over her mouth, moved.
The director gave us space, and we went to talk to the little girl. She was sweet, talkative... and every moment with her only confirmed what I feared.
She was my daughter.
My mind went back in time. My ex-wife and I had separated when Laura was just a few months old. She had pulled away from me suddenly, without explanations, and never mentioned being pregnant again.
The truth hit me like lightning.
She had hidden from me that we had twins.
And now, one of them was standing before me, living for years forgotten in an orphanage.
Carolina squeezed my hand and murmured:
— "Miguel... we have to take her home."
I looked at Isabela, and tears began to well up in my eyes. My heart already knew the answer before I even spoke the words.
— "Sweetheart, do you want to come home with us?"
Her eyes sparkled.
— "Really?" — she asked with a hopeful smile.
— "Really."
She jumped into my arms, and in that moment, I knew that our family was finally complete.
But in the back of my mind, one question haunted me:
Why did my ex-wife hide Isabela’s existence?
I needed to uncover the truth.
