Tragic shark attack: 17-year-old girl dies after being bitten at Woorim Beach, Bribie Island
A female swimmer has tragically died after being attacked by a shark in the waters off a popular tourist area on Australia’s east coast, according to authorities.
Emergency services responded to a call at Woorim Beach on Bribie Island, located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Brisbane, at around 5 p.m. local time on Monday following reports of a serious shark bite. Queensland police confirmed the incident.
"The woman was swimming when a shark bit her… she suffered life-threatening injuries and passed away from them," said a police spokesperson in an email.
Though the police did not release the victim’s age, Australian media widely identified her as a 17-year-old girl.
This marks the third fatal shark attack in Australia in just over five weeks. The 17-year-old girl died after being bitten while swimming at a beach in the northern part of Brisbane.
Emergency responders arrived at Woorim Beach on Bribie Island, a popular destination for tourists, after receiving reports of the shark bite. Paramedics attempted to treat the teen, who had sustained severe injuries to her upper body, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries, police confirmed.
The victim, later identified as Charlize Zmuda, "sustained life-threatening injuries and passed away from them" about 15 minutes after the attack, a spokesperson for Queensland police said.
Christopher Potter, a local resident, mentioned that the beach is frequently used by swim groups during the day.
“There are known to be many sharks around Bribie, but this close to the shore, it’s still a shock,” he told Australian public broadcaster ABC News.
